2022 - 23 Plantation Bottoms’ goings on …..

Afternoon all -
This ain’t got nothing to do with the bottoms’ but I just saw the dangest thing.
We got an old mamma groundhog that took up a hole under a rock ledge on my creek bank. Anyways, she had 4 babies and they are in to everything. We have got a kick out of watching them. A couple days ago, 3 of the babies(about 1/3 grown) were over by a little oak bout 2 or 3” in dia. playing and one of them stands up beside that oak, looks up and starts climbing to about 4 or 5’ high. Then, looks at the others and chatters and comes down and then another one climbs up. In a little bit, that one comes down and another climbs up. They did that all afternoon!
I’m 71 yrs old and seen those things all my life but never seen that!

They may be cute but years ago (I am 72) we shot them on site. I have used gas poured in holes a set a fire also used a hose connected to exhaust of tractor. They could eat 1/2 acre of beans in short order. I hardly ever see one now. Enjoy the little things.

Morning folks -
Well, it still ain’t about the bottoms, but it’s still some goings on just the same.
Seems the movie folks wanted another go at the cabins yesterday evening. Going to be a short “shoot” of about 2 hrs which turned in to 7 hrs leaving at midnight.
The actress was Miss Jonell Mosser. She’s known all over Tn as a singer/song writer, actress and she was incredible! What a nice person.
Maggs found a friend in the “script girl” plus she had treats!
We just never know what tomorrow is going to bring..

First time I seen a ground hog climb a tree it threw me for a loop. We have to kill everyone we see gets expensive when they get settled in a field.

Me2. Tree-climbing groundhogs is funny.
I kill them every chance I get because they ...you know.

Groundhogs: my mom got the bright idea of tossing peach and apricot pits around the yard into the bushes.
Eventually some grew. We had the only peach tree in the city but it never made a peach.
Apricots however...they bloom and they're pretty.
They bear fruit that falls off green and never ripens but the groundhogs love em.
There are volunteer apricot trees all over the place from them eating the green fruit.
Neighbors keep asking me "what's that tree with the pink flowers?".
Apricot. Then they say "no way it's too far north"

Back in the 60s & 70s, I poked a lot of holes in 100s of groundhogs. Never thought about them climbing until I saw one sitting on top of cedar corner fence post. The most comical thing I saw one do was eat an ear of sweet corn like you see in cartoons. He was sitting up, had the ear between his front paws and went at it like an old typewriter. He'd eat across the cob and then go back to the other end and start all over again. I let him enjoy his meal before poking a hole in him.

I guess I’ve kilt my share over the years but no more when they ain’t bothering nothing. Age has taught me something I reckon.

Me & Galloway did some maintance work today up at Ole Thorneside Cabin today, just because….
Got the driftwood burned up, kinda sorta,
Weed eated the cabin area & parking lot and graded back up the drive and pulled back up the rocks from the rains. It looked dang nice when we finished!
