we are still waiting on the salmon fly hatch. I've actually missed it every year for the past 4 years, always a day early or a day late. So far the hatch has been a week or more late. A week ago the bugs were still under rocks and five or more feet off the bank. We felt bad for those folks who had paid for guides and nothing going on, well felt sort of bad, well, maybe we didn't feel bad. We are hoping the hatch gets rolling after this cold front.

So far the salmon fly hatch has been non existent. We saw a few in the air and got a few eats but all of our fish today were on nymphs. Lots of dead salmon fly dead in their shucks on the bank. Water levels have been changing daily which doesn’t help at all. When we rowed in to last chance ramp I thought we were going to have to get out and drag the boat. The water had dropped 170 cfs in three hours while we floated the box.

We got in another good day of fishing on the Henry’s fork. Six good fish from 18 inch to 20.

I'm back home while Caleb takes some friends fishing over the weekend. I'll be heading out again mid week next. He is scouting by himself this evening and boated a couple of 18 plus trout. They are messing with the water levels on the rivers a lot this year, they just can't decide whether we are in a drought or not. After looking at the map and dealing with all the water around the state I don't think it's a problem, yet still see commercials on tv for conserving water due to our severe drought.

I've been flocking decoys all morning trying to finish up some work here at home so I can go back to Ashton next week and then I get this photo. It makes it mighty hard to focus on the work at hand with pictures like this one coming in on my phone. Although fishing has actually been really tough this year, we've caught a lot of big fish and Caleb continues to add to the total.

Caleb and a friend caught three more good fish yesterday, an 18", 19" and a 20.5" brown. That was all the fish they caught though, the year continues to be strange and we are catching very few fish under 17 inches. Honestly I'm good with that, I'd rather catch a couple good fish than 20 small ones. The bigger fish are picky and you go through a lot of fly changes to get them to eat. There hasn't been much of that reckless feeding since hatches have been small and short. Hopefully the green drake hatch will get things changed, but no sign of that happening yet, hopefully by the middle or end of the week when I go back over. While I work at home keeping Caleb's other business going, all I can do is drool at the pictures he is sending.
