Correct, bumble bees nest in old mouse or goffer holes. The boxes are set at ground level with a brick on top.
You actually use old mouse nests for the nesting material inside.
Something about the smell attracts them.
They are great pollinators for the cone flowers .
BUT..... they will hammer the **** out of you if startled.
Bugger got me twice between the shoulder blades last fall.
