DNR Seeking Public Input On Fall Migratory Game Bird Hunting Season Proposals

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the proposed 2023-2025 migratory game bird seasons. The proposal is open to public comment until March 10, 2023.

Highlights from the proposed season structure include:

  • 60-day restrictive scaup bag limit that allows harvest of 2 scaup for 45 days and 1 scaup for 15 days.
  • Increased Canada goose bag limit to 5/day during South Zone Holiday Hunt.
  • Shift in Canada goose zone opening dates to provide more opportunity and consistency.
“The 2023-2025 waterfowl seasons will be based on the 2022 continental waterfowl population estimates,” said Taylor Finger, DNR Game Bird Specialist. “Habitat conditions appear to be above average in Wisconsin and near average in the Canadian Prairies, so we expect populations to remain near normal in 2023. If we have favorable conditions this spring and fall, hunters can expect good waterfowl hunting opportunities.”

The DNR will host a series of public meetings to present information on the proposed 2023-2025 migratory game bird seasons. The public is encouraged to attend or provide feedback using our Online Input Tool.

Comments regarding the migratory game bird season structure should be submitted through the Online Input Tool, email or mail by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 10, 2023. Additional information can be found on the DNR Waterfowl Hunting webpage.

1) 15 day early waterfowl season-- Canada geese and teal only, Sept 1-15th

2) Eliminate "open water zone" in favor of the existing the 2 zones North/South which can then utilize 2 splits (instead of 1) in South Zone. Use the two splits to accommodate the opening weekend rumdums, the migration hunters (late Oct/early Nov) and the "hardcore" late season hunters (early/mid Dec).

Well based on the feedback Sunday there still as a fair amount of people opposed to 16 day teal. So if you want it better go vote for it.

Just wait until we get a 45 or 30 day season on we open the the south zone Saturday nearest Oct 1st

That would still be when the vast majority of fowl migrate through the state.

Correct but having a NZ run from Sept 25-Oct 25th and a SZ run from Oct 1st - 31st/nov 5th seems kinda assine. Maybe stagger them a bit. Gain a few weeks. Probably a dumb idea. I’ll shut up

I'm just gonna say this but I wish the southern zone went till the second week of December. Start the season a week later. I just like late season hunting, you're not sweating your balls off and getting the blood sucked out of you.

But I guess I understand why it starts when it does.....
