As hard as it must be for you to visualize, the MDC has purchased old duck clubs and other hunting property. The Busch family purchased and donated land that is part of 4 Rivers WMA. Several WMAs started out as donated lands that the MDC then enlarged by purchasing surrounding land as the opportunity presented itself. There are at least 3 of them near St Louis……..all of them are draw areas.

You can not imagine what duck hunting ground…..even poor duck hunting ground goes for in this area so, it can be done When you have a commission willing to do the work and has the funds to do it……..but then you don’t have that…..have never had that and quite frankly it is obvious that you think you will never have it.

Like the old saying if you think you can’t do it……you are right

Then would it be reasonable to assume that the kill numbers days afield etc are under reported due to the trash app?
No. People who use the app lie both ways. It's all speculation and vodoo

Some exaggerate their harvest, some hide their harvest and some just don't hassle with it.

As for the FWS data, it's hocus pocus too! The HIP surveys are skewed badly. Data is only as good as the people entering it.

Legislature is a different beast here as well. They dont want land coming of the tax rolls nor do the local governments.

I guess they have never heard of in lieu of real estate tax payments….it is often built into public entities taking possession of properties.

My brother is a fire chief here locally. They have a large area here that was taken in the 60s they have to protect but get no revenue from. So apparently those run out at some point. Years ago they would offer grants or help them get wildland firefighting ppe. Now they get nothing.

Here they would send a bill and if it wasn’t paid then there would be a lien filed and a law suit….if not by the fire district then by a citizen’s group

Absolutely. Or not reported at all. Or over reported. Who knows with a consistent failure of the app to even work. The data is trash.

I watched a warden here opening weekend of teal season at a WMA. He sat in the parking lot and was checking license plates from the cab of his truck. I watched him entering data on something and can only assume he was checking to see if people were logged in?? I’m sure it’s part of Uncle Stuart’s data he’s gonna wow the public with this spring during the commission meeting. We, (the public) won’t be able to comment or question it mind you. You see, here in KansasStan you are only allowed to discuss regulations or participate in an open forum discussion if you are an outfitter.

What the warden wasn’t doing was being out in the marsh watching Cooter and crew from SC sail teal with no attempt to recover them. He also missed Roll Tide Festus smoke a flock of Woodies and the ensuing boot stomp.

Again……..failure at the top
There is no excuse for that app to be that bad.

It actually is quite difficult, Kansas has a law on the books that prevents KDWP from outright purchasing, I believe, tracts greater than 140 acres. One of the DU projects that was purchased from a willing seller and DU wants to transfer to KDWP took years to get done because of the law. Much of our public land is actually federally owned flood plains around flood control reservoirs which is leased to the state.

The window that was open from the 1940s - 1980s where there was a lot of land changing hands at large scale due to the “modernization” of river systems has pretty much closed, and rural Kansas legislators who have a lot of power in the legislature are NOT interested in the state government acquiring land.

So, KDWPs only real option is leasing WIHA land which is nice for deer, pheasant etc but Kansas is not like Missouri, the western 2/3 simply does not have water availability like Missouri does where you can build wetlands. It’s pasture ponds at best, and even those are drying up yearly as the aquifer is further depleted. The eastern 1/3 is very expensive as it is either very valuable tillable land, in some cases cattle ranching, or broken up into 10-20 acre homestead sites and exurbs.

It really, truly is not as easy as “just buy more” here.

We are basically done with acquiring public lands besides an 80 acre lease here or there, but we are far beyond our carrying capacity with hunters, to make a biology parallel.

Nobody has mentioned the screwed up water rights that Kansas has. Wildlife and parks tomorrow could purchase the most ducky 2000 acres and have zero water rights to flood it.
