Five mallard bands, one pintail, one gadwall.

Didn't shoot a banded bird until my 11th year hunting. One year I shot three. I haven't shot a banded bird in four years.

I don't get many geese but there are quite a few banded these days.

    Cool band story:

Hunting Colusa on opening day in October 1987 I killed a banded drake mallard that was banded at Honey Lake the year before. Cool. So in January 1987 I am at San Luis NWR and I shoot a banded drake mallard. He is banded at Honey Lake, same bander, same date the year before and the number sequence was like 19 numbers off from the October bird. Maybe brothers?

So what are the odds of the same hunter killing 2 birds out of the same banding batch, 3 months apart about 200 miles apart?

Band stories are the main reason I think bands are cool. So many amazing stories out there. Even cooler are those GPS things where you can track where the bird has been. Those are incredible.

My two gw teal bands were banded a year and two days apart in same place in Alaska. I shot them a year and three days apart from same blind near sac refuge. That’s when we used to see teal at my place in January.

Your post reminded me of a telemetry mallard I shot. Telemetry report showed it had been hanging out in Sink. It ventured out to a burnt rice field along Gridley-Colusa. Was full of rice. Needed water badly. Came in on a string. Funny thing is that I didn’t notice telemetry back pack on bird right away. I saw it later that morning. I threw bird in tub after dog retrieved it and kept hunting. Flight was better back then, I suppose. Felt bad for USGS biologist who sent me flight report as bird only had telemetry on for a few weeks. Sorry man, guess he caught a dumb bird.

Kootenay river, British Columbia is the farthest for myself. A couple from Washington and Oregon. Most from the Grizz.

First band I got was on a Canada goose 49 years ago.
I've gotten about 10 duck bands, all drake Mallards and all from LDC
I haven't gotten any bands in the past 20 years. I'm overdue.
The oldest drake Mallard band that I got was 13 years old.
