4 mallard bands, 1 wood duck band, and 3 Canada geese bands, 45 years hunting. Granted I don't hunt as much as I did in my younger days as my work schedule conflicts too much

How is this possible?
Our goose leas of over 25 years no bands.
Over 7500 geese taken.
Last week, the FIRST banded goose was taken.
1 every 7500.
Come on man!!

You should probably let the geese land. Pick out the banded geese. Then shoot said banded geese in the head with TSS. Everyone else is doing it.

That’s why they use black bands now.

When was this one killed??? I want a black band to add to the lanyard pretty bad after I first saw a guy kill one. I think it would be all luck as it would make it much harder to see. The aluminum goose bands are really easy to see.

Dont have that many waterfowl bands (20ish I think) but have like 120-130 pigeon bands and I know I let an easy 30-50 go to the guys that hunted next to me at the dairy when they'd show up to hunt with me.

In 50 some years I've held exactly 1 duck band .
Group hunt and I drew it , even after insisting I didn't shoot that way .
Made them redraw without me .guy that got didn't shoot it either, but he was all about it.
No longer hunts with us.
I'd say our goose bands run closer to 1% maybe
less .
All have been from pretty much 3 areas .
Local within 40 miles or so , Northern Minnesota or Manitoba

January of 2022.

In 2022 the WI DNR started banding adult geese with black bands to thwart band shooters. But you can still see a black band if the goose is close.

I’ve determined it is just luck. I don’t keep a kill count but figure I’m around 1000 ducks and have zero duck bands. My buddy has shot maybe 200 ducks and has 5 bands. His dad less than 100 ducks and 3 bands. My bro 3 bands and he hasn’t shot half of what I have. I must have got my luck from my old man. He has probably killed a few thousand and has one band.

I haven’t shot many canadas because I rarely target them. Maybe 100 total and I’ve shot 2 bands.

Years ago, there was a study conducted by one of the state universities that banded and collared resident canada geese. The collars were white and it was the kiss of death for the unfortunate goose that got one. Way too easy to see them when a flock came floating in.
Currently, there is a telemetry study going on in west TN to see how blacks and mallards are moving about on local refuges. I don't know the total number of birds with GPS packs on them but a bunch have been killed. They wouldn't have been killed if they were staying on the refuges but instead they are moving out of the safe zones and hunters are killing them on public and private land.

They all look pretty black after setting on a sewage lagoon for a couple months.
