BRING BACK THE FLOCK

We need to start a movement to bring back our Canada Goose flock in Southern Illinois. Time for the establishment of a resident flock of Canada Geese by the use of nesting boxes. We have done a good job with the placement of wood duck boxes in our wildlife areas, everyone is always encouraged to build and place wood duck boxes, the same thing needs to be done for Canada Geese.

When you look at the aerial surveys for waterfowl this past year, take January 23, 2023 for example, it showed only 2,003 Canada geese in Southern Illinois! Union county had 32 and Horseshoe had 45, with Crab Orchard holding the most at 907. Gone are the days when thousands of Canada’s were found in these areas, and really the reason why they were built and existed was for the management of Canada Geese!

I am not going to go into why these geese have gone, there are many variables in this equation and wanting to stay positive let’s just say what has been done, is done. Let’s start a new program aimed at building a resident flock for Southern Illinois. Let’s dedicate ourselves to placing goose nesting structures everywhere we can, Driving along the interstates we have hundreds of borrow pits with stable water that would be perfect for these nest structures as well as farm ponds all across Southern Illinois.

I would like to see all our waterfowl organizations commit to helping place these nest structures everywhere we can. Goose nesting structures are very effective, lets get the ball rolling and help bring back the flock to Southern Illinois! Who is in?

Sounds good until you realize many states and communities are doing everything they can to knock back resident populations. Egg oiling, depredation permits, special hunts etc. Going to be hard to get any waterfowl orgs to back it.

You could not be further from the truth! If you want an organization that will support & back this reach out to your local Delta Waterfowl chapter! If you are not sure who to contact you can send me a private message and I will get you in touch with the right people!!

The ONLY way this will work is if you can get the goose limit dropped to one a day or close the season for 5 years. About 10 years ago we started having more local nesting in the area near Crab Orchard. As soon as the Sept season opened the young of the year were eliminated. There are still too many clubs and peopke that remember how to kill geese to just put out nest tubs and expect success. Without protection there will be no net gain.

I wanted to transplant goslings from a local area to Horseshoe Lake instead of our local Prison oiling and destroying nests. Local DU Chapter was on board and so was Joe Thurston site Super at Horseshoe/Union. Our local biologist and State Waterfowl Head Randy Smith said “It doesn’t Work” I call ********!!!!! and told them that emphatically!!!!!! Another option in My Opinion is Eliminating the Early Season in the former SIQZ until each Refuge Fock is around 500 birds.

As my ole mentor Jake Kringer wildlife biologist for Illinois Dept of Conservation before it was IDNR and Outdoor hall of fame member use to say he couldn't believe we were in a day that Canada Geese and Whitetail deer would be considered nuisances, but that seems where we are! It makes no sense to have a 3 goose limit when you only have 2000 Canada Geese in Southern Illinois, as well as an early September goose season for Southern Illinois. Back in the 70's SIU did an economic study on the value of the Southern Illinois goose flock, it was worth about 10 million dollars for the four poorest counties in Illinois, Alexander, Union, Williamson, and Jackson, it would be a lot more in today's $$$, that is another reason why bringing back the flock would be so important. As recreational hunters, we need to give back to the resource and reducing the kill and increasing our resident flock is the way to go! Build a nest box and put it out, it would be the least we could do!

guys, some things to think about. And I can understand you wanting to have great goose hunting again and I honestly hope you can . but the glory days of northern Il hunters coming down and spending big bucks in southern Il. are most likely over for good . now don't get me wrong you may pull out of state hunters from some of the southern states , but up in northern and central Il. shooting Canadas has become so easy and we have shot so many over the last decade or more that some of us have lost interest in killing them . I go back to driving hours to Rend lake to shoot 1 goose , now after ducks go out I wont drive 7 min. to our duck club for a sure thing goose hunt !

All over....usually too far from home

It doesn’t work. This has been tried many times in multiple areas. As soon as the transplanted birds regain their ability to fly they go right back to where they were transplanted from.
