I wonder what size bullet the 270 and 6.5 advocates are shooting?
Shot my cow 5 weeks ago with 6.5 Hornady 143 gr ELDx. 170 yards, double lung pass through, she took 15-20 steps and piled up. golf ball sized chunk of lung blown out the exit. Had my .270 with 130 gr. ttsx as a backup gun, but why carry a heavier gun with more recoil?

That 143 ELDX is no joke. One hell of a bullet killed a few deer last 2 years and it is a nasty round.

Bird Junky I have laid up a few boxes of 162 ELDX's for my 7MM Mag along with a few boxes of Barnes 140 LRX, another great bullet.

I've killed a couple with 270 Win with 130 gr Partitions to 250 yards. But I don't take marginal shots. My son has a couple with the same load out to 300 yards.

Ive killed a lot of big game with one shot,, but many of my big game animals Im able to put a 2nd shot in the animal before it is down

A friend is a guide: His hunts are the expensive . A well-known personality insisted his 6.25 Creedmore would do the job. . the bear was found a week later. He blames too small of a gun ( bullet). In his time guiding has lost two bears over 500 lb to be found after the meat and hide were lost.
My buddy insists that if you have a big gun that's what you use, big gun-big bullet

My father in law likely had killed well over 100 muledeer bucks and 21 bull elk, plenty of bears, antelope caribou, sheep , goats. Expert marksman and hunter.
He killed 5 consecutive bull elk with a 243. Out in the open and was able to watch each go down.
He made a perfect broadside double lung with a 30-06, They spent 4 days searching for that bull. A local guy found the bull sometime later : The bull scored 393

Maybe a hunt of a lifetime.
an animal of a lifetime.
Heck even the worry of searching for an animal for a few hours,,, .
15-20 steps today and finding lost game days later, it isnt worth it to me!!!
As a hunter not all game can be shot in open range where it may not matter if an animal goes 20-50 -150 , 350 yards.

Shooting 160 gn bullets, my first Montana bull, I put 2 bullets in it, and my only Utah cow, 3 bullet: First Idaho bull two bullets All good killing shots but!!!
I did put 5 shots; 30-06; Remington 180 Corelocs; in an old huge blacktail all where they needed to be,,

took 15-20 steps and piled up.

My whole point is even the best kills shots game can still go 10-400 yards . People talk about how tough elk are. but most game can and does go even if its a short distance.

I do need to state I dont wait for animals to drop Even if the shot is good. I put bullets in them till they are down.

My youngest daughter killed her moose 175gn. 5 yards, and 7 yard shots . Took off the top of the heart and arteries and the moose went 160 yards I cant imagine the extra work if that bull had gone down a canyon 160 yards instead of up hill and back towards the road

Healthy, fatty animals often have 10-30 seconds to bleed out, inside even with a quality double lung, heart shot.

Heart shot on an antelope pumping blood out the side and decided to run, She didn't need a 2nd shot , but the follow-up puts them down. 425 yds 140 Nosler partician.

fall 2021 my partner made a good double lung shot. In his excitement, I don't think he could see . He looked up, I looked down. that bull went over 300 yards. shot at 4:30. I walked up found the bull at 7:45 .
We both knew it was a good shot but the frustration of looking at those last hours was so upsetting to him. he couldnt even believe that I found the bull where he had been looking.

The kid at work is all hyped up after killing a "freezer" muley at 400+ yd.'s w/a .223 Creedmoor. He wants to use it for elk w/a heavy for caliber bullet -100 or so grains?

Pick his shot, he will be fine. Take the wrong shot, like trying to bust through the shoulders, and he is asking for trouble. Bullet make-up can help with that, but like shot sizes, there is give and take with that.
