Hate it for the fisheries and the folks who make their living off it.

Just asking because I don't really know, is this closure politics or what is best for the fishery?

Rivers are closed too.
Don't forget it was the commercial guys and guides who ASKED for the closure. Their trying to get federal money. Also towns like Bodgea bay will get hurt without all the salmon fisherpersons not spending money there. All unnecessary IMO.
REDUCE limits, season length, or salmon card where you can only take X number of fish a season.
The bay halibut are going to get pounded all the salmon boats will be there. F&W better do something like reduce take to two fish.

I have never understood why they tinker with take and size so hard with some species, and then just CLOSED on others.

And last year seemed to be a really good ocean catch for the sportfishing guys and commercial guys. I have no data to back this up but my guess would be that there is still a fair number of salmon that are swimming around out in the ocean that didn't make the fall run. And every year there are a lot of salmon that are released out of HMB that will only return to HMB and never be accounted in a fall river run count.

Big part of the data used in the model is jack returns which was poor for multiple years. Compounding the whole thing are the impacts to various runs and their status as threatened or endangered.

TKOM,

This isn’t directed at you, but you provided some language that I’ve been hearing.

I’ve heard a lot of people talking about how the Halibut are going to get pounded this year.

It’s a bummer that Salmon is closed. If the commercial guys and guides want it closed to collect Fed money, then so be it. I’ll support that. But why should those guys then be able to recuperate additional money by increased halibut fishing?

I support commercial fishermen and guides. But I’m not ok with taking taxpayer money and then also getting to profit off of private dollars in a double dipping type of scenario.

Just my 2 cents.
