I have a property just north of Clovis with a 7 acre lake that has been basically dry for the past
10-12 years. Not dry this year! So far 3 broods of Honkers and 3 broods of Mallards, that I've seen.
There is at least another 6 pair of Mallards, and a couple pairs each of Gads, Cinnamons and Spoonys
hanging around, so I'm sure more are about to appear. One pair of Honkers nested on the 4/12 roof of my shed 25ft. above the ground. 3 babies made it from that nest. So I think the old saying of " Just add water" definitely is helping our local production all over this state.
90% of the mallards I’ve seen the last couple of weeks have been drakes. Im expecting to see ducklings all over the place here shortly. Our local wetland, for example, has reliably held 2-3 dozen mallards since about March- right now I’m counting about 15-20 drakes on any given morning. Hens should be off the nest shortly if they’re not already. Saw my first brood last week, about 12.
Geese also seem to be doing well. I think I counted 12 goslings total between 2020-22. This year that same wetland I counted 15. With the river up I’d imagine there are some happy woodies in all of our sloughs as well
