The soviets have had our missile sites identified down to less than a foot...as far as location...since the 60's. When we decommissioned and destroyed older Titan II silos in the 80's and then some of our Minuteman sites later...we always and deliberately left the silo covers open so the Soviet satellites could confirm their destruction. Xi has low orbit satellites that are FAR better equipped for espionage.

So...two ideas:
1. the balloon came in across the Aleutian islands and through Canada into Montana. Well...good ol' Trudeau and our back-bacon eating brethren to the north either couldn't detect it or didn't give a crap enough to let us know. Had to be over Canada for days...I know some of those Canucks must own a pair of binoculars. This might confirm what I've believed for years. Canada doesn't much care what happens to the US and are no particular friend. Never have been.

2. Biden is heading to meet with Xi soon...couple weeks I think?...maybe they wanted to gauge the 'sniffer's' reaction. If Biden actually took the time to look up from his "Winnie the Pooh" coloring book during his daily 'fun time'. Aaaaand actually pulled a trigger...that might send a message. If he totally ignored such a silly gesture as a balloon...it sends a whole different message.

Screw Canada.
What would be great is if we assasinated Trudeau and took it over and made it free.
Then we would start with oil drilling and pipeline construction.
In a few years we destroy Chinas hopes.
We end up sitting in the catbird seat.

I’m not sure if the “Open skies” treaty doesn’t cover this. I believe Trump may have somehow cancelled the treaty because the Russians weren’t complying.

I’m not sure if the treaty has been reinstated.

Reports are it hit Alaska before us, and the two administrations talked.. they just waited until it was over the lower 48 to make it public.
