Conceal Carry at Schools? Utah Got it Right

This is off my VCDL ( Virginia Citizen Defense League) e mail alert. VCDL is my state’s Second Amendment defense org, that does excellent work in our state. We are very fortunate to have them/us. Ever heard of a mass murder in a Utah school? There haven’t been any. If you were a bad guy, who would you shoot first? Teachers, staff, parents, visitors could all be carrying guns. You shoot the principal and the janitor in the hall behind you draws his gun and blows you away. You shoot a teacher and a visiting parent takes you out. And all these armed citizens are INSIDE the building and not marshalling outside for 40 minutes. That is what a real deterrence looks like. But, what about Resource Officers? There is usually only one, and he might have to go from school to school during the day. He is also uniformed. Thus, he is easy to identify and monitor. Once he leaves the school, or if he gets ambushed, there is now nobody with a gun to stop a mass killer. VCDL has been pushing for the Utah model here in Virginia for years. It is free and means that any given school will most likely have many CHP holders carrying at any given time. It is not an experiment, where we don’t know if it will work. Utah has been proving that it will work for a very long time. No one in the school should be required to get a CHP and carry there. Not everyone wants to carry a gun. Only those that want to get the permit on their own would carry and nobody would know who does or does not have a gun, since they would all carry concealed. You have to wonder if one of the teachers who was shot had been armed, how many innocent lives might have been saved. But you have to also ask yourself why other government buildings have metal detectors and/or people with guns protecting them: General Assembly Building, the Capitol, DMV, courts, city and town halls, the Governor, Congress, the President, etc., but we don’t bother with much of anything for our precious children. All they get is a “No guns” sign and maybe an officer who comes and goes and who may or may not be armed (the Fairfax County Board of Education, for example, does not want armed Resource Officers). VCDL will keep trying to get the Utah model passed in Virginia until we succeed. Look to Australia. They had stricter gun laws put in place in late 1990's/early 2000's and yet their suicide rates have stayed the same over the past 20+ years.

Yes, they will!

You know why?

Because the teacher is in the room with the shooter and self-defense kicks in. The parents are protecting their kids.

The cops were cowering in the hallway. They had their chance.
