Just spoke to customer service from my favorite shell company, and inquired as to how and whom I could order shells from (more difficult in California due to having to go through an FFL to purchase ammo).

Here is what he told me (in a nutshell):
  • Increased demand (due to 1 million new gun owners).
  • With increased demand, hunters are buying more than they need (when they are available) in fear of not being able to purchase in the future.
  • Drastic increase in raw materials and manufacturing costs.
Very friendly person, and he does NOT think that the cost will come down, but availability will likely increase (hopefully soon).

Just went through our local fleet/farm, the guy was stocking shelves with waterfowl loads and they were pretty full, prices are still high but you can get some for $19-22 for a 25 count box.

All are waterfowl seasons are closed now.

If I saw shells (that I wanted) for that cost, the day after my season ended, I would purchase enough for myself and daughter for next season right then and there! (Locally boxes are going for $30-35/box for shells that work, but not my preference)

Picked up two cases of Herters, 3"2's 1550.
$205/case, ridiculous, but I'm buying more soon, real soon.

Just got 5 cases of Hevi-steel for $210 each yesterday. That appeared to be the bargain of the year.
Cheapest I found 3 months ago $189 for Rios.

Nope. Been saying this since it started being scarce. But, I was wrong. It is a profit making conspiracy. No doubt those comments will be forthcoming.
