    BILL DETAIL

In this demo, I am using a bluebill head out of basswood. Almost every diver and puddler have the same basic bill "detail" excluding mergansers etc...I know all this bill detail is not necessary for a gunning decoy, but i like to put it in anyways because i find it to be good practice.

    Materials List:
    Pen or pencil
    Reference materials(i am using bills)
    V hand gouge
    Carving knife
    Sandpaper(using 80 and 200 grit)
    caliper or compass
    woodburning pen
    (from left to right)

    Procedure

Find your centerpoints and mark a definate line.

I find the nail, nostrils and side lip

Right before i start, i plug in the woodburning pen because it takes about 5 minutes to warm up.

I am going to take my woodburning pen and melt away the wood. You could also use your demel or foredom or even your drill press to make this hole. You dont want to make it too big...find a measurement on a real bill of the species because they all have different sizes.

After you have both nostrils melted in, you can unplug your pen and go back to your carving table. I will take my V gouge and go around the whole bill about 1/2-1 MM from the border of the nostril

After i "raised" the nostrils, it looked like so

Next step is to tackle the nail. I am going to use the V gouge again and cut it right along the ref line and gradually smooth it out into the bill. I will later go in with some sandpaper and round the nail.

Going into even greater detail, i add where the top and bottom of the bill is. From your reference line, use the V gouge and cut from the line down and take away about 1-2 mm of wood. This will make the top pice show up better. After you have that indented, round it. If you have really studied bills, there is a little lip that is right by the edge of the bill. Take you V gouge and run it along the edge about 1 mm or so from the edge

This lip is between the two blue lines

lastly, i will extend the front lip as pointed in the picture. Take your V gouge and go right a long the line and then round it out.

Sand the whole head from 100 grit down to 220 and your ready to seal and paint.

There you have it, a detailed bill on a gunning decoy!

    Good luck and enjoy!
