I've been working with my 6 month old chessie with retrieves and basic behavior. I'm noticing he is very sensitive and not taking well to correction. Are there any trainers in the valley that take a softer approach?

A good trainer will adjust to the sensitivity of the dog.

Reading tempermant and adjusting accordingly is dog training 101.

I have a 6 month old choc lab who had a similar issue. Shorten training sessions so that he is always successful. End the lesson as soon as he shows any sign of distress. Give him loads of praise and love when he does a good job. Be very consistent. Train everyday if not twice a day. More shorter lessons are better than one long one.

Are you looking for someone to work with you through group training days and private lessons, or somewhere to leave the pup?

While the Chesapeake is a physically tough dog they are generally pretty sensitive to correction and will be turned off by pressure sooner than most Labs. The old 2x4 to train a Bay dog couldn't be further from the truth. Check out retrievertraining.net and search chesapeake, lots of good info and recommended trainers.

Troy at CVGD.... He trained me and my dog. He listens to what you want in a dog, as well as what your dog is saying.
