I'm playing around with flocks of starlings, my 10 gauge, and 2.25 ounce reloaded shells of #7.5 and #6 lead shot. How far can a #7.5 and #6 lead pellets get 1/2" of gel penetration with a starting velocity of 1200 fps? FYI, starling season is open year round in my state. There were a bunch of dead starlings in my yard yesterday evening. A fox came at night and took them.

2-1/4 oz of lead shot would be a bunch of recoil to shoot Starlings

2-1/4 oz of lead #6 shot would have about 506 pellets
2-1/4 oz of lead #7-1/2 shot would have about 786 pellets
2-1/4 oz of lead #8 shot would have about 924 pellets
1-3/4 oz of lead #7-1/2 shot would have about 611 pellets
1-3/4 oz of lead #8 shot would have about 718 pellets

1200 fps lead #8 shot gets .50" of gel penetration at 60 yards.
1200 fps lead #7-1/2 shot gets .50" of gel penetration at 66.9 yards.
1200 fps lead #6 shot gets .50" of gel penetration at 97.2 yards.

The pellet count on 2-1/4 oz of lead 7-1/2 shot "786 pellets" and 1-3/4 oz of lead #8 shot "718" pellets are not that much different. Only 68 pellets less with 1/2 oz less shot.

No such thing as overkill for flock shooting starlings!

A buddy shot a relaod of 1 5/8oz steel 3’s 1350fps in the 10gauge, while early goose hunting a few years back, at some doves (10+ all bouncing around on the ground) ranged about 95-100 yards in a sod field. Killed 3 when he flock shot, stone dead.

The lead 6 range probably ends it’s effectiveness around 65-85yards in a similar scenario.
