With Salmon off the table it is a good time to bone up on Rockfish information. This is especially true because in some zones you have to fish in water 300 feet and deeper until July. You might encounter Rockfish you have not caught before nearshore. I can highly recommend the book Rockfishes of the Northeast Pacific by Love, Yoklavich and Thorstein. It is literally an encyclopedic quality document. A friend of mine's father Julius Phillips made great contributions to the study of Rockfish starting in the 1950's. A number of his photos and illustrations are in the book along with many up close underwater, color photos taken from a submersible.
For fishing at depths 300 feet and deeper, some are turning to electric reels which are very expensive. I recommend you find used Shimanp TLD 20 2 speeds and load with 65 pound braid. I own 3 of them, they are great reels that can be pretty easily serviced by using Alan Tani's excellent tutorials.
