Practice is great, if it’s great practice. Practicing bad habits, just keeps one bad.

So yes, get out and shoot. But don’t by shy of getting some help. There are more ways to drop a target than being behind or in front. And it’s so great when kids start off correctly. It gives one more opportunity to put them into a successful situation.

Best shooting advice I ever got was simply to practice, practice, practice gun mount: focus on a spot, bring the gun to bear and be on the spot. Frequently, needn't leave the house. Credit the late Bob Brister.

And when you do go to the range, for the love of making killing ducks and geese easy, shoot your clays from the low gun position, not pre-mounted. Isn't a whole lot more frustrating when birds are trying to come into plinking range, than having guns coming up to pre-mount and tipping our hand. Credit this old guide.

If you choose to shoot low gun on a sporting Clays course do it on the appropriate stations. Especially if you're just starting out, as you progress so can your low gun...

Any recommendations on shooting ranges in the east bay or within a hour of there to shoot rifles other than on a bench and out to 300 yards?

Not east bay but look at Sac Valley Shooting Center. They have a great public facility.

My hit numbers go way up inside 30 yds. Did good at holding that last season.

I need 30+ wind in the pouring rain to go practice the shots I miss.
I do need to practice gun mount from the sitting position. I don't stand to shoot out of the blind. More then a few times gun mount is horrible and it hurts. Haha. I still kill with the poor mount so how important is it except the pain.
Took a lesson from Matt yrs ago it really improved my killing as long as I do what he taught me. Old habits are hard to break.
