For those of you that haven't jigged up a halibut, rock fish or striper recently the technique has been made much easier and more fun with the invent of slow pitch rods. These rods are around 5 oz and range from 6 to 7 feet. The days of vertical jigging with broom sticks and Penn Squider's are gone. Now with braid and the new jigs that are very easy to use you can target fish in 300' of water and not get fatigued. These new jigs come in a variety of shapes and are sized by grams not ounces. When you get a chance google Soft Pitch Jigging and you'll see how this technique was invented in Japan and has spread world wide. I have guided all ages on this method for most salt fish and I'm very happy with the results. The biggest advantage is young and old can fish way longer with these light rigs and not get fatigued. Another benefit is the fight is more enjoyable on these small rigs. No bait? No worries! I believe if these are fished properly they will out fish live bait. I like to have both options because just sitting with arms crossed drifting bait is nice as well. The soft pitch does get people more involved and the grab is phenomenal. Hope this helps during the Salmon closure and if you have any questions please drop a note.
