Very good and timely post Gregg.
A number of years ago I swithched to light outfits for Rockfish.
Mine is an 8 foot Loomis rod that I built from a blank my friend Gary Looms spun for me on a Salmon back bouncing rod mandrel. The reel I use is an old Pro Gear 501. I can jig all day with not wrist fatigue. I wrestled so many big Lings off the bottom away from rocks with drag all the way down that spool shaft within the spool finally let go. This was beyond my reel repair skills as the spool shafts were heated very hot at the factory before being pressed into the spool. My buddy Alan Tani repaired it with epoxy and said he would like to come up and give his light gear reels that kind of workout on big Lings. He is welcome any time.

Uh oh you might make the forum cop upset posting this non duck topic.

Nice photos Capt. I pitched a metal at a Sierra today off the beach and it tore my line apart. 9 foot 4 piece fibi with a stradic...I've lost 3 lures to them already...probably need a wire leader

It was about this big.
On a side note... how do I catch a roosterfish Capt. ???

I got so excited this morning I seen at least 3 fins fir sure but no takes. Probably 20 feet off the shoreline. I wish I had the heat you're talking about but all I got is my pack rod, irons, poppers, cabo killers, various lures etc.

Throw that popper or surface irons on and get as much pop and skip as you can. They are an angry fish and I wouldn’t be surprised if you get a take on the surface…. What is your spinner loaded with? If you get action in the surface crank even faster don’t ever stop the lure or the rooster will stop almost immediately. Crank crank crank till your arm feels like it’s going to fall off.

40 pound braid. I saw some incredible stuff this morning..fish flying 10 feet out of the water going 100 mph chasing bait. Just couldn't cast out far enough. I'll get on em tonight or tomorrow early. Tempted to hop on a panga.

Cute picture of the kid. But the picture seems to be out of focus. You should have centered on what was walking out of the water.

@Capt.Gregg I have been toying with making a lighter rock and lings combo... using like a tranx 300... sick of penn paintcan and broomstick. How dependant is slow jig on the rod? They look crazy... wife isnt on board with 5 different setups for niche things... but looks really cool! thanks for the info!

I’d say slow pitch jigging is very rod centric, Gregg may have a different take on it than I do but my personal experience with it a slow pitch rod has been the most important part of the set up other than the jig itself.

Very dependent. Handle length and weight plays a big part. I also highly recommend the spiral rap rod. It reduces braid wrap on the tip while gigging. Wife? Never on board, that's why our biggest fear when we die is they sell our $*^# based on what we told her we paid....
