That started in 2001. Take 'em 6 DVD to be exact.
I'll be honest...that's the exact reason I started hunting there!
There's duck to be killed there, but it ain't necessarily good. Some days are better than others, obviously.
The mallards don't build up decent numbers late anymore it seems. Occasionally a flock will develop and provide decent hunting for a couple days...but timing is purely luck. You can't bank on a weather system to help out anymore.
And now these days, when you get a flock building on the lake, you get these dips**ts anchoring boatblinds in the open water...running those birds out in short order.
It's still a cool place to hunt, but high expectations are a thing of the past, for most.
Santee will never hold the birds again like it used to. Now if you could get NE and SD to agree to shut it down at noon or 1 PM maybe it would get good again but never to what it once was.
I'd be all for that!
There were 42 boat trailers at Santee on Friday . We saw 4 ducks and shot 2 of them. Saturday we never fired a shot. Great hunting !
We feel your pain. Doesn't take much to ruin a place.
