How often should you use a lens hood when shooting? I'm sure the answer will be it depends on the situation. Well, let's say I am a newbie and as for right now I'll be using my camera on auto a lot until I learn more about photography and how to use the features.

So :l, back to my question, how often should you use a lens hood when shooting?

I use it every time on my 100-400... it keeps things that much further away from the front element.

Not only does it protect the lens element,,,somewhat! (which is not it's principle intention)it is primarily designed to help avoid stray light from causing glare and flare!
