I have always said feet, beak, bang. Dont stop. The swing. Follow through. Aim beside the lead bird and kill the one behind.

Yup don’t bother shooting at a honker unless your shooting the white patch cus a body shot won’t penetrate those feathers , even heavy shot don’t do what ya think it will unless you shoot the head or neck … I shoot steel #2s all I ever shoot for both dux and geese and have killed piles with them out to 50 + if need be ..most shots are under 15 yds .. and you do miss cus you have a golfball pattern that close .. no room for error .. I always tell new goose hunters to forget the body only look at the white patch .. I’m a taxidermist , I know how few bbs penetrate that down and it’s very few even close range , it’s like body armor ..so for honks shoot the white patch and if ya miss the white , the neck is the next best to kill a honk ..

Point/shoot where the bird is headed, not where it is.

I find it is much easier to kill a goose or duck with a head/neck centering shot. For Canada Geese, I want to hit that white patch on their head every time. You can usually tell those kills when the head and neck drop and the bird folds up immediately. Much easier than trying to penetrate the body with heavy feathers and a butt shot means you'll be running after them.

My main advice would be that you gun must always be in front of the bird to kill it, regardless if it is 15 yds or 50. Keep your gun moving, as it ensures that your shot is indeed in front of the bird, and if you miss, you are usually afforded an easy second shot. I have several POV videos that you may want to watch, as they show the different types of leads (sustained, slow and fast english/pull through, snap shooting, and sometimes more than one method on the same flock. Here is an example:

Were you able to go hunting again after that one or, spend the rest of the season cleaning birds?
