HSUS is again asking its members to call their Senetors and oppose the Sportsmen's Act . Below is a message sent out by the CEO of HSUS:

"Please make a brief, polite phone call today to your Senator urging them to oppose S. 1996, the "Sportsmen's Act"."

After reading this, I called and left messages of support for S 1996.:flame

Here's what HSUS is asking its members to email to Senators:

    S. 1996 would mandate that recreational hunting, trapping, fishing, and shooting activities be prioritized in all aspects of land management on millions of acres of federal public lands. Most federal lands already allow hunting and fishing, and federal land managers should not be bullied into giving additional preference to the fewer than 5% of Americans who hunt.

Furthermore, S. 1996 would allow a small group of wealthy hunters to import polar bear trophies into the U.S. in defiance of current law. The polar bear is already in peril and allowing hunters to skirt protection measures by importing polar bear trophies is not only **********, it's irresponsible conservation.

As if that weren't enough, S. 1996 also threatens to eliminate the jurisdiction of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to protect the public, wildlife, and environment from lead ammunition, even though other federal agencies have condemned the use of this toxic ammunition. Lead ammunition needlessly poisons millions of animals, waterways, and soil every year, and alternative ammunition is readily available.

For these reasons, I urge you to oppose S.1996 to preserve the integrity of our wild places and maintain protections for polar bears.
