Got five ducks including a drake mallard x black hybrid in a coastal salt marsh this afternoon. Game warden was nearby. 0203D03D-DF00-4DA1-B0B2-5B60F9A19C12.jpeg

Did you count your hybrid as a black duck? or other?

Seems like a really gray area to me. You could have just as easily called that one a mallard hybrid. Always best to play it safe I guess

A waterfowl biologist at a NJ Waterfowl Seminar said that hybrids are considered to be black ducks in NJ.

Thought they were counted as "other" as in not as part of your Mallard nor Black limit. Maybe varies from state to state. I will see if I can find where I read it. May just be the Maryland interpretation.
