Gotta make sure we can whip that southern tail next time y'all are feeling uppity again.

Aren’t you from Maryland? The yankees whipped y’all before you even started. Y’all weren’t on that side of the conflict.

Maryland was voting to secede when Lincoln violated the constitution and invaded. Once completely in Union hands, what would you expect? One side was conscripting men from Maryland, and joining the other side required sneaking across union lines where you could easily end up shot as a spy.

Point being, the citizens of Maryland wanted to join the south but were invaded and occupied in hours.

Don't be silly. Virginia voted to secede on April 4th and it failed. South Carolina had already been gone for 3 months.

If they wanted to secede they would've. Just like West Virginia wanted to stay in the union. Or like Virginia didn't...then did. Lincolns tampering was successful only for the fact that the state was largely divided and he had the support of the governor. The enlistment numbers seam to support that most people wanted to stay in the union. Virginia is right there. We share a large border, an ocean, a beach, a few rivers, and a bay. Somehow 20k men, including whole regiments, made it over.

Conscription was attempted but barely used by both sides.

This was pretty much the case in all the border states.

President Lincoln wanted to back a deal where the Federal Government would buy the freedom of the slaves and resettle them in their former homelands(if desired). 600000 lives would have been saved as a result. Compromise would have been better than war. Sadly the Henry Clays of the day did not prevail. If you don't learn from history, you are doomed to repeat it.
