This summer my family is planning a trip and we will be taking a detour off the route just to stop in Kansas City to eat lunch and try the KC BBQ. Do any of you have any recommendations about a lunch stop famous or secretive (you could PM me if it's a local place you would rather people didn't know about)?

I can go online and look at all the reviews, and I have, but it's tough to beat advice from people who have been there. I know about the big name places, I guess I'm wondering if it's worth the wait in line at places like Arthur Bryant's, Joe's, Gate's etc.?

I also know food is subjective but will gladly take any recommendation into consideration any of you willingly give.

I've been to Joe's gas station location in KC and Joe's in Olathe Kansas, I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I liked the KC Joe's a little bit more.

Although the Olathe location has a sweat BBQ store nextdoor.

I didn't care for Gate's at all maybe they were having a bad day, I thought Bryant's was good and I would go back again in a heartbeat if I was in the area.:tu

Very subjective, you'll get lots of answers. A lot of KC people's favorite BBQ is their own.

Your top spots are going to be Gates, Joe's Kansas City, Jack Stack, Q39. I'm not a huge fan of Arthur Bryants but some people like it.

There's a few small places like LC's BBQ which has incredible burnt ends.

For the well known places, Joes is hard to beat. Definitely go to the original gas station location on 47th street.

I have had quite a bit of the options. I would rank them this way

    1. Joes (Gas Station original)
    2. Arthur Bryants (The downtown not secondary chain ones)
    3. Gates
    4-10000 Rest

I appreciate the replies. Joe's is high on my list so I'm glad to hear it is well recommended by you all. I know it's a subjective thing to ask about as I also like my own homemade smoked stuff, but we will be close enough to the area we want to stop somewhere.

I highly recommend BB’s on 85th Street two blocks east of Troost Ave.
