Youth day. No dog. Retrieval via cast net or treble hook.

Youth hunt this season with my oldest Kierra. She was dead set on getting her first limit, and managed 7 birds with 21 shots (1 pintail, 2 widgeon, 4 green-wing teal)...

She made a great shot on this stud bull sprig!

Gotta' learn to clean em' if you are gonna' shoot them and eat them.

Getting the feathers off, not so bad using a picking machine:

Pulling the guts out... Not so much fun:

Took my middle child on the juvenile hunt last weekend and she bagged her first duck in the air (she killed a couple of woodies on the water last year). Her first flying duck was a bull pintail.

In all my years of hunting, I’ve never bagged a pintail. I’ve never even gotten any to come in close enough to get a shot off. A pair flew between our blind and the decoys. She raised her gun, tracked the lead bird, and fired. The bird hit the water and she yelled “I got one daddy!”.

Watching her drop that pintail was better than getting one myself. She’s already talked me into getting it mounted. She named him “Thomas Jefferson” lol. She got a hen later on in the hunt.

Well this morning was our final hunt of the 2022-2023 season. I was hoping I could get some ducks to light in the decoys, so my son could get a shot at one. 5 minutes into the hunt a group of wood ducks lit near the decoys just as I hoped. My little man raised his “Quacker Smacker” (yes that’s the name he gave his youth Sa-08 lol) and blasted a male woodie. I retrieved the duck and discovered it was banded! Lucky little turd.

my daughter wasn’t having as much luck as she did last week. She was throwing plenty of steel, but just couldn’t seem to make contact. Finally, a group of green wing teal came screaming by over the decoys. She emptied the clip, and dropped one lol. It was a fun season. Both of my little ones have now done something I haven’t been able to do in 30 years of hunting. My daughter got a pintail when she bagged her first flying duck, and my son got a band with his first ever duck.
