Ive got some buffer areas of my pond that have become overgrown onto my wax myrtle and red cedar buffer as well as some of my oaks. I can cut and remove some but some is just too thick. Is there any herbicide that will work that will kill the vines if I can only spray about half of it? I cannot spray it all or it would kill the stuff I want to keep. Anything I have used so far simply knocks off the leaves where I hit and the vine lives on. Most honeysuckle, va creeper and brambles/greenbrier (not exactly sure of type but they have a waxy broadleaf). I can get my hands on most herbicides as we have a pesticide license. Thanks for the help.

24D is my go to, but I don't have a license. Can you take a weedeater etc, and run it through to "skin" things up? That, can open a path for the chemical to enter the heart of the plants. Similar idea to killing small trees, where you take a hatchet and knock the bark off, and chop into the tree a bit. Then it hit with a heavy dose of 24D.

Ive used 24D and it doesnt kill it all the way unless I hit the entire plant. I can clean up in some areas, would be tough in others. Thats why I am hoping I can spray part of it and just have the whole thing die

Have you tried Crossbow? It kills a lot of stuff and might work on vines. I know it will kill briars and is really good on brushy stuff. I use around my place.

I will second giving Crossbow a try. Vines are notoriously hard to kill due to extensive underground roots.

My patch was not particularly thick, so take it with a grain of salt, but I too wanted to kill some VA Creeper whilst keeping the plants around it alive.

Selectively spraying Crossbow on as much of the leafage as possible (whilst not risking the surrounding plants) worked incredibly well for me.

Save some for a second dose if possible though, you’ll inevitably miss a vine or two or ten.

So I’ll “third” a Crossbow application.

I deal with vegetation management for a job, and this is what I would recommend. A systemic herbicide applied is your best bet. A small 1 gallon sprayer under lower pressures and direct application should do the trick.

Crossbow is what I usually use. It just doesnt seem to kill it all if it doesnt hit the whole thing. I am gonna try that again and I will increase the strength of the mixture

Thanks for the help on this.

Look into Remedy for a little more potent mix, or Aquasweep which is a water soluble version of Crossbow since you’re using near your pond.
