I was wondering if anyone had been out after Pheasants. Growing up as a teenager in the late 50's and early 60's there ussed to be a ton of Pheasants, not anymore. Would have a limit of 3 birds in the first 15 minutes on opening day. One year you could even have 1 hen in your limit.

    Pete,

I wished I had pheasant hunting like you just described! I didn't start hunting phez until the mid nineties.
I love shooting long tail 2 plus year old birds but they get harder and harder to find and I have to pass on younger birds to get long tails like these. These 2 cocks are the result of an entire day of pushing very tall snow covered cattails and extremely thick Russian Olive groves, the kind where the dog and I come out cut and bleeding. He loves it and I just can't help but follow him in if he believes there is a bird in there.
I have never been out of state for phez, have you? My dog, Buck, is 8 now and I trained him in heavy cover. I want to get him to a place like South Dakota or Kansas before he, and I, get much older but I don't know where to begin.
I can't even imagine having pheasant hunting like you just described. Even 3 birds in the first couple of hours, much less 15 minutes would really keep a dog and hunter motivated.
    Thanks for your story, Shane

Here are some photos. The first are what I call 70MPH photography, as in pointing the P&S camera out the window or windshield at speed and hoping for the best while keeping the truck in your lane:

It got dicey over Monida Pass:

In fact, I came upon this semi crash just minutes later:

After Dillon it was nice, back up to 70MPH instead of 45MPH:

I went out for a quick afternoon hunt yesterday, which turned out better than expected. These were big birds, the one on the lower left was probably my largest ever:

Just a couple more prairie pictures. I spent yesterday scouting out in the middle of nowhere, as you can see:

I didn't have a lot of time to set up for a better image, but geese against a full moon are hard to beat:

I set up on the X today, which explains the under 30 minute limit. Being covered up with several hundred geese hovering 20' overhead is special:

Jon, I can't believe you shot those two seagulls. Other than that, nice trip!
