Tejas you’re going to get hammered in local taxes, fees, utility bills, etc- equal to or harder in some of the other so called low tax states.

Our politics and ever increasing amount of bums, garbage and felons are indeed buzz kill for our nice weather though.

Relative to A gallon diesel, gas or milk or a carton of eggs, it’s cheap. Cost probably hasn’t even caught up with inflation if I’m being honest….

Maybe, maybe not. Here, property tax is .58%, income tax is 3% lower, there's no additional county income tax, or any other county specific tax not found where we came from, there's no sales tax, electricity is cheaper, propane is cheaper, fuel is cheaper, vehicle registration is cheaper, insurance is cheaper. Like I said earlier, our meat supply is an easy go, and I seriously doubt I'm paying more than $.20/lb for it.

I don't know of any cost here that's more expensive, so to say Tejas is going to get reamed by going elsewhere may not be true. Now, to be sure, when checking other states/areas there are definitely "extras" built into the cost equation that would have to be considered. Without a doubt, there are places where where it will cost more overall to live than California, but there are places where it will cost far less. The bottom line question is: what are you willing to put up with to be where you are?

I get the guys who don't want to leave family, 100%. I get the folks who would like to go, but can't due to a variety of circumstances. What I don't get are the folks who say they want to go, and could, but don't. Those folks need to put their money where their mouths are, be cause the only thing holding them back is fear. You want to go, you have the ability to go...the ball is in your court: put up, or shut up.

How bad do you want it...or do you really want it at all?

lol everyone here in CA rationalizing the significant price increases yearly. with all of the services and quality going in the toilet. just like more taxes and a continual downward spiral when it comes to quality of life here.
but we have mild weather, and an ocean! hahahaha

just like the gas rationalizing. oil has been hovering around the low 70 bucks a barrel for over 6 months and it's still in the 4-450 range! talk about CRIMINAL. but i guess we're all just used to it. one little wave of 650 and we think "oh heck 450 is fine now!"

this is what THEY want people to say! good little sheep we are. (yes me included, i still live in this pile of sheet and haven't moved yet!)

it's a communist state, but a beautiful one!

To the guys leaving out of state... did you just abandon your parents and family or did they come with you? My wife and I just cant up and leave our jobs, parents, whole life...Its just not that simple.
I did, but at the time I wasn't married, had a full time job, or anything other than family and friends to hold me back. And when I first left, I didn't know whether or not I was gonna stay gone. Found a place I liked and decided to stay if I could. Ended up not staying in the Sandhills but I sorta like where I'm at now. Friendly folks, got a few farms I can hunt and plenty of open ground to make things interesting.

Homes just a phone call away...

I think I’m relatively the same age as you and probably in the same boat….just not catching as many halibut. By random chance, I live half way between my parents and my wife’s parents. So can’t leave now. They will probably all be gone in 10-15 years. At that time I’ll have 3 kids middle school to college age. So can’t leave then.

By the time I retire (mid 60s, and 20+ years from now), where I retire to will probably be mostly dependent on where my kids live. Feels like the Idaho/Montana retirement dream won’t be nearly the cost savings it was 5-10 years ago. Out of state places are already getting pricey.

With how hard life is with 3 little kids right now I appreciate any help I can get. I’ll probably choose to live close to my kids/grandkids when I retire. I would take more joy out of that than hunting, fishing, or saving some bucks moving out of state.

That’s just me. To each their own.

Good for you to move to wherever you have chosen.

I had no problem moving and breaking the living in California cycle. Wished I did it years before. Fear of the move and thinking I had some obligation to family and my job was the big things holding me back.

Turned out to not be true. One trip to see some family in college here for a road trip vacation was all it took. House was on the market 1 month latter.

Also encourage my 3 kids to move where they would be happy and not feel that they have to live near me and my wife. Not a single one wants to move back to anyplace in California. I hope they spread their wings and go far.

5th generation of California and in the same county and broke that cycle. Still even a bigger world out there than where we are now.

Duck hunting and bass/crappie fishing is not bad either.

Part of reason for price increase is lack of contractors and building materials since COVID have gone through the roof (pun intended) so new construction of housing is expensive.
