Maybe I didn't phrase that well. The problem with the money isn't that it isn't there, it's how it's allocated.

Can't speak for MB, but the OMNR (now OMNRF, they merged with Forestry and amalgamated a bunch of districts) has been the victim of cutback after cutback after cutback. It's a shadow of what it once was.

Gotcha, sounds like government alright. Still, the concept of increasing prices, and thus revenue, until the number of customers levels out where you want them seems a better way of dealing with what y’all consider a finite resource with too many customers wanting a piece.

And passing laws which won’t be enforced is cheap. Maybe they should have increased nonresident license prices until hunter numbers stabilized or dropped off a bit. Solve the problem while raising more money to cover enforcement of game laws.
Yup......make it so only the rich can participate. :fp:fp:fp

Demand and supply is what dictates price in a free market. The new system only guarantees a permit to those who have the means to book an outfitter. Talk about elitist and catering to the wealthy.

Never known a poor American who traveled to prairie Canada for a duck hunt. Would fewer go if the license fee doubled…how about tripled? Such wouldn’t break anyone who has been traveling there, but at some point it will make a percentage think “that money is better spent elsewhere.” I’m already there when it comes to Canada due to the time and travel required simply not being worth it.

That hasn’t worked too well for big game tags. Demand is higher than ever even though tags and lottery costs have gone up and up.

I don’t want waterfowling to become a rich man’s sport. Lots of blue collar people travel to Canada to hunt waterfowl. Sounds like you’ve only done outfitters so you probably wouldn’t see that.

I’ve DIY hunted Canada for fifty-some years. I started young when money was in short supply. Even back then the license fee was the cheapest part of the trip. Even if doubled or tripled, the license fee would not be the primary component of most Canadian trips today. Sure, it might cause enough heartburn for some people to avoid Canada hunting. So be it. Those people can stay home and hunt locally.

Like I’ve said before, cheap hunting is not a given birthright. Get used to it. If you intend to be a long-term hunter you should invest in good ground or a long-term lease. Don’t blame somebody else for not providing a venue that fits your “blue-collar” budget.

LOL, the only way to be guaranteed a license will be by going through an outfitter. I’ve never freelanced Canada due to time and distance, but I’ve freelanced plenty and am far from a rich man. And again, no poor man travels to Canada to hunt ducks.

Are those laws not enforced? If there’s a significant lack of enforcement, seems like it would make sense to begin by enforcing current regulations before wasting time, ink and paper on new. Canada certainly isn’t alone in saying “Hey, this law we wrote and don’t enforce isn’t helping, so let’s write another law and hope folks take it seriously.” Happens plenty on this side of the border, and it makes no sense in either country.
The CO's I know say it is extremely hard to enforce because it is extremely hard to prove due to lack of records of cash transactions.

I feel bad for you that you live in an area where you have to buy land or lease. I hunt in the northern states and I have freelanced all my life and have never paid a dime to hunt land. We shot limits or came close every day last year and other than opener there was basically no pressure. I can hunt on a blue collar budget and have plenty of birds.

Increasing license costs won’t do a thing other than give the government more money to pizz away. I will continue to hunt other providences where I am not forced to pay an outfitter.

License costs are nothing more than another tax. You guys seem to like giving the government money. Personally I feel I give them more than enough.

LOL, don’t feel bad. There’s plenty of public land here, and much of it is really good at times. Many of us choose to also lease some land, and most hunters I know would love to own a good piece of duck property as property ownership is a staple of the American dream.

As to collars, there are a little over 20 guys in my lease, and over 50% are in blue collar fields. Frankly, if you put a dollar value on your time, and anyone with a job and family should, it can be far cheaper to lease a place here than spending tons of time scouting/learning public ground and to purchase the equipment necessary to have a good chance at consistent success.

The wave is coming to your state. We used to be like that. It is no longer the case in many areas. As we become more depleted, and access becomes increasingly difficult, they will be looking for a new state. Sounds like yours fits the bill. I said I would never pay to hunt. We'll my brother and I are looking for our first lease. Im lucky in that I own land with a pond in a traffic spot. I dont shoot many off of it, but gives me a place to go if I want. Its coming so you better start to adapt now.
