I just started planning a fall trip to Montana for upland birds. 2 guys, one dog--all three pretty inexperienced at upland hunting.
Part of me wants to go in October when pheasant opens, but with an Elk hunt at the end of October I'm not sure I can make both happen. Looking at chasing Sharp-tailed grouse and Huns in September which I have zero experience with. My main goal is to have a fun road trip and get a young dog on some birds. 5 day trip including driving.
Any advice would be appreciated. I know how to find public land and meet landowners, but I don't know exactly what kind of habitat to look for. So time of year, general locations, habitat, and essential gear, etc...any help would be much appreciated.
