Nevada waterfowler recently relocated to Fairbanks

Hi guys, new to Alaska. Avid duck hunter. I’ve been scouting around for ducks and haven’t had much luck in the point where I’m confused on how to know if you can hunt a place, been on and off the phone with F&G but can’t get any real straight answers. Checked out cramers field but turned around when I seen the backside parking lot was full. Any tips would be appreciated. Hell at this point I’ll carry the decoys and cook breakfast just to get some ducks cupped up in the decoys. Thanks

Make friends with a local… to watch tour truck at the landing.

Not in the military, I work for Kinross, that’s why I’m here. I’ve heard Minto flats can be really good. Also heard that the natives will bust your windows out. But thanks for the info. Any spots you suggest for someone without a boat?

Good duck hunting away from crowds requires an expedition...I go for 15 days, boating in 60 miles and set up camp.
There are many rivers in interior Alaska that have excellent duck hunting but it is a big time investment, most places
that are walk-in off the road get pounded by hunters. We also have a fairly short season with a hard freeze in early October
the norm, so the month of Sept is when to maximize time duck hunting. Since you work at Kinross, ask some of the employees,
I've seen some of them at Valdez where they chartered for a sea duck hunt in November a couple years ago.

I hunted Minto flats in a Scanoe (square back canoe) with a small outboard.

hunted out of the boat in knee boots. 1/2 dozen decoys.

We’d camp out for a 4-5 days. Each would bring home their 30 duck possession limit and either eat or give the rest to the locals. They prefer the ducks whole, guts and all.

carton of cigarettes or a bottle of whiskey will keep your truck safe… but finding the right guy to watch it is the challenge. We used the pale face guy that was hiding out from the law. They finally caught up to him.


Get a boat. Expense but there the Resell value is good. Godevil or jet drive. Can use it for moose and caribou hunting too.

Minto Flats is an example of an expedition...at least 4 hours to get in, so most folks camp for a few days.
In September, a jet unit grate gets clogged with leaves so a go devil type prop motor works better when
the water is choked with floating leaves. Another option is to fly in on floats.
