Well I know that some of you have one last weekend. But my hunting is done. So I am starting to clean and stow gear and evaluating next year. There are some things that we will be changing.

1. We will be getting invisaman blinds for next year. With the log gone we have to adjust to new conditions. Coffin blinds are great for the mud but will not work in 2' of water which is part of the tide cycle in our prefered location. We think this may be a potential solution. We are at least going to give them a go. They are stupid expensive so we have to start saving now.

2. I am evaluating my shotgun shell choices. I will NEVER buy winchester shells again. There was a marked difference between shooting Federals, Kent, and Winchesters. Same shooter, way different results especially at the end of the season when the birds are shy and you have to set up a little further from the decoys to get any action. I had numerous birds get knocked down then suddenly revive and fly away! More than any other year I can remember. I lost birds that swam away. Just not hit hard enough.

The question I am wrestling with is if I go away from steel and go to one of the heavy shot alternatives. I have not done this due to the expense. But when I look back at my season what I am realizing is the sheer number of shots I am taking waterswatting crippled birds. If an alternative to steel would give me better performance I might be able to justify the extra expense by actually using less shells.

Any thoughts on what to avoid or what to get?

We have it pretty dialed in but there is always room to improve and tweek.

What are your thoughts after going through the season?

Going to do some dog-work in the off season. Need to get Hank dialed in on delivery all the way to hand. He has started dropping birds on the way back so he can get a few seconds of licking before I take it away. Other than that, this season went pretty smoothly. I'm shooting Federal 3" 1-1/8th oz. #2 shot at 1550 fps and I have been quite pleased with the performance. Dirty for sure, but if you clean your gun at least once mid-season it's not a big issue.

Zephyr the wonder dog will make his appearance next year. Spring and Summer will definitely be getting him ready for the season.

I like federals and have had good success with them (in the the 3s) but I am Hevi curious.

I have noticed a marked difference in the Winchester shells. I thought it was just my age but switched to Kent in the last few hunts and had some improvement in my killing. The price of Winchester has risen greatly so next year I will switch to Kent.
Good post Padre!

Well, I think next year I will hunt exclusively with the over/under. I will use 2 3/4 ammo like I have most of this year. I will do more solo hunts, and try a little more puddler duck hunting. Got some work to do to finish my boat blind, and figure out some quirks in case I don't want to hunt right next to the bank. I've hunted on a bigger boat most of the year, and enjoyed it, but there is just something different when you go it alone.

I have seriously considered building my season around a big start and a big finish: Alberta or Saskatchewan in September and Central Flyway / Midwest to close out during the snow goose conservation season. I would consider any other successes (the Idaho Panhandle season) a bonus. This year was crummy for a variety of reasons, and we scouted and hunted as hard as we always do. But the early start to the season (the weekend following our youth / veterans / active duty military hunt) combined with brutal cold that brought birds earlier than usual but drove them away earlier than usual made for lots of disappointment. It's also getting more crowded in our little section of the world and areas / spots that we previously had to ourselves are now being overrun with other groups and in some cases, over-hunted.

I also just bought a used 7 x 16 cargo trailer that I am turning into a gear hauler and redneck camper conversion so that will be put to use for a few road trip hunts next year.

Next year I will have a Suzuki 2.5hp motor for my AquaPod. The electric motor has its uses, but is too slow in current and runs out of juice.
After making it through this season without a dog, I’m looking forward to having Roxy along next season.
Oh, and I’m pretty certain I need some more decoys.
