When Beyond isn’t effective in our sunflower fields (Clearfield variety) and we have weeds, I have never sprayed them. I just set the mower lower than normal.

Here are a couple pictures of our fields:

For the last 3 years we have been spraying ours 2 - 3 weeks before the season. First time we sprayed with Paraquat as the Ragweed was so bad we wanted everything dead. And does that stuff work, field was brown in two days!
Then I got to thinking about eating those doves that were eating the seed that was sprayed with Paraquat and we have not done that since. The last two years we have sprayed RoundUp and were really happy with the results. Made for a cleaner field with a lot of dirt showing after mowing once everything died off.
Will probably do the same this year as the Ragweed has come on strong since I cultivated. These pics are from Monday evening. Seed heads are made and are heavy and drooping.

Amazing how the ragweed can take over late in the growing season. That being said there are some really good sunflowers in there.
Seeds are not 100% dried down yet but there were plenty of doves in the field.
Sprayed them with Glyphosphate on 8/11 and mowed one strip. Will go back weekly to continue mowing strips.

I second that, incredible looking field! All sorts of bare dirt after mowing for the doves.

Thanks fellas. A few weeks to go. Sprayed it today to keep the undergrowth at bay and eliminate any remaining ground vegetation. Lots of birds around. Just no major cold fronts please!!!!
