I used to, like 40 years ago before I signed up for this full-time job I got. I remember dropping .22 shells on the ground and leaving them there, thinking there goes a penny a piece (roughly).
Back in the 60s and 70s, I did a bunch of chuck hunting. Most of it was somewhat long range, shooting over alfalfa and timothy hay fields with a 243 and a 22-250. The most fun I had was sneaking up close and popping them with an old Remington single shot 22 that I had refinished. I did manage a few (very few) with a S&W model 63 22 lr with a 4" barrel.
