Potential Omaha Move

Hi all,

I'm expecting to receive a job offer next week for the AFB there in Omaha. I've wanted to move out that way for awhile so fingers crossed it goes through. I'm originally from Oklahoma so being closer to family (and back in the Central Flyway) is something I'm looking forward to.

Just looking for any and all feedback about living in Omaha and also duck hunting Nebraska. My understanding is public options are limited in and around Omaha but further west they open up, is that true? Thanks in advance for any help.

Nebraska has the least amount of public land percentage of total acres. That being said Nebraska is a big state and there are plenty of opportunities on public land in the state, but it takes scouting, trail and error and some luck. Nebraska has 4 duck hunting zones, we can hunt from the first of October to the end of January somewhere in the state.

Don't overlook Iowa. I live on the Missouri river and buy an Iowa license every year, there is quite a bit of public land opportunity along the river valley.

thanks for the feedback. i'll be moving from western Virginia which isn't exactly the greatest place for duck hunting...I've basically only ever hunted public, so understand how the grind can be. As an Okie it seems the birds always hang out in Nebraska and Kansas until the end of December, so moving there seems like a dream to me.

I worked in Omaha for a short spell on assignment and I thought it was a great city without the madness you'd expect. Definitely a great move for you I would say. Good luck I hope you land it.

Thank you. Supposed to get the offer early next week. Moving from Virginia to Nebraska will obviously be a huge upgrade hunting wise, and I’ll be a lot closer to family as well

Theres lots of hunting along the river I imagine. If you travel further west to hunt the more public opportunities you will have. Some really good hunting in the Rainwater basin and then further north and west in the Sandhills

Walk in Public hunting is limited near Omaha. If your a boat blind hunter there are more opportunities with man made lakes with in an hours drive and the Missouri River. If you plan on buying a home be prepared to pay heavy real estate taxes, we are a high tax state unfortunately! Been hunting waterfowl for 30 plus years on mostly public with some private mixed in. Great state to raise a family and be a duck hunter; we winter plenty of birds for most of the season. Good Luck!

Thanks! How useful are kayaks there? I have a very nice 14’ with a great blind on it.

Some of the smaller public hunting lakes could be ok for a kayak and public marshes/basins during very wet years. Unfortunately It’s been a dry year so some marshes are very low or dry right now and frozen! Just be mindful on windy days with non motorized water craft on bigger water… at times we have serious wind. I would avoid big water and definitely the Missouri River with non motorized boats in the winter.
