I saw this on another site. Are you Illinois guy's required to register your hunting guns?

Registrants must also possess a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card from the Illinois State Police. Although a FOID card that has expired within a year of the drawing is acceptable for the registration, hunters are required to have a current FOID card before they can hunt a site in the fall. Applicants under the age of 21 do not need a FOID card if they are accompanied by an adult who has one. Hunters are reminded that if they do not have a card in their possession, law enforcement officers will not be able to validate the hunter's FOID card status on the day of the drawing.

It depends on how you define "register".

I wouldn't say that all guns are "registered" in IL (at least not in the way they have been registered historically), but most definitely, all Firearm Owner IDentification (FOID) card holders are registered with the Illinois State Police. The ISP is the Govt. body that issues the cards and maintains the database. All LE personnel in IL can access the database to verify if a card is valid, just like a drivers lic.

Now in IL, a citizen of the State requires the FOID card if they wish to purchase ammunition or a firearm or have a firearm in their possession. When a firearm is purchased through a dealer, a form is filled out for the ISP and the dealer calls in for the instant check. Even with the instant check, there is still a waiting period that varies depending on the type of gun (handgun vs longun). The dealer maintains the form you fill out for a period of some years (10?). So in the end, the instant check records that the purchaser has purchased a firearm but not what type of firearm. Still in all, there is a paper trail that can tell them the mfg, mod, caliber and ser. # of the firearm you purchased. Furthermore, if two private parties purchase/sell a firearm between the two, they are each to verify the other has a FOID and record the info on it and keep that info for 10 years.

Now FOID has been around since the ‘70s. It is so commonplace here, that as I was growing up, I was surprised to find that other states didn’t have it as well. I have seen it be used for good purposes as well as BS and overall, I think it has outlived its "usefulness" in this age of instant checks. What is trying to be pushed through the IL legislature now though are laws that would make two private parties go through a dealer for the private sale of a firearm as well as true registration with local LE of all guns.

In other words...

YES - IL has, for a long time, required that anyone who owns, possesses, or wishes to purchase a firearm be registered with the state as a "firearms owner." They keep this database...aggressively.

NO - IL does not CURRENTLY require the registration of ALL firearms purchased/possessed in the state. But they do require said registration at the municipal and county levels in many jurisdictions within the state...especially with regard to handguns. And there is a VERY serious legislative push to effectively make IL the first "gun-free" state in the Union (I exaggerate...slightly).

With the now Federal back ground check what the Illinois F.O.I.D. amounts to is another tax on gun owners and a way for big brother to keep track of all gun owners in the state.

If it sounds like a duck, walks like a duck and looks like a duck,it`s a duck and this duck is gun regristration .
