I friend of mine was hunting his club last week and dropped a pintail. It was a swimmer so he started chasing it down in the boat. His O/U was propped up leaning on the console with the (safety on). He made a sharp turn and gun slid and hit the floor. And BOOM blew a hole through the side of the boat.

Even with the safety on. If you jar a gun hard enough the sear can drop and the hammer will fall.

Be careful out there!

safety comes off about the time I swing out front of the bird. Plenty of time. Muzzle control is key.

My favorite safety lecture, probably stolen from a post here somewhere: 1. Don't shoot me. 2. Don't shoot my dog. 3. If you shoot my dog, best shoot me right quick.

The infamous BoWhoop had no safety as I recall. Mr. Nash wouldn't load his gun till the muzzle was outside the blind, IIRC.

The first had no safety. The second, to his dismay, was equipped with a safety. He believed a safety encouraged poor muzzle control habits.

Safety comes off when gun comes up, second nature and don't even know it anymore. But bill is correct, safety's are fine, muzzle control is the real danger, someone has a barrel pointed in an unsafe direction I'm not asking if the safety is on.

My gut tells me all here that say the safety comes off as the gun is shouldered also pay strict attention to where the muzzle is pointed . Good safe gun handeling is ingrained in most of us from the start !
