The company just had to add a button onto their website that says “tip”, hoping to get money from foolish people without doing any effort.

They do it because there are people who pay it.
Ice fishing "bungalows" are a big thing locally here. You pay to rent a sleeper hut and stay on the ice. It's a cash cow. 10 week season, average hut sleeps 6. An operation will have anywhere from 10-30 huts.. they are generally @ full occupancy for weekends. Going rate is 200 / head. The "operators" don't do a whole lot, really.. they might transport you out to the hut or might just escort you out. They check on you 1-2x a day to make sure everything's good and that's about it 90% of the time. 1-2 guys do the running. You're paying for the hut. Not so much the service. The operations that have licenses for commercial huts usually do it as off season revenue.. it's a "side" to their main summer operation. Cabins / camp grounds / fishing charters.
There are guys who (unprovoked) promote tips/gifts to the "operators" out of "appreciation"... generally citiots who don't get out much.
