Looking for a short range (less than 150) yards, soft recoil rifle for deer hunting. Most shots will be less than 100.

Years ago there used to be one simple answer for that question that everyone seemed to agree on, get a .30-30.
Now by the time this thread is done you'll have 40 different suggestions, most of them probably being good, but IMO it can get very confusing.
For example I shoot my .243 for deer and it hasn't disappointed me yet, but a .30-30 isn't that much worse in the recoil department to me anyway.

Yeah, .243 would have been my suggestion.

For a short range and brush gun I used an SKS and shoot 7.62x39 154gr soft points. Extremely soft recoil and it takes down our blacktails nicely. No scope, just the iron sights because in the brush here a scope will be wet and fogged up when it's needed most. Definitely not something to push to even 200 yards though.

If an actual max of 150 yards might look at a few of the straight wall pistol cartridges. Not that anything is wrong with what anyone has suggested. .357 can be accurate to 150 yards as well as 44 mag. Definitely not a flat shooting cartridge. But I like how cheap they are to shoot compared to many of the high velocity rifle cartridges. Another cheap one to shoot as Joe suggested is the 30/30.

I have a Ruger 77/357 with rear peep sight. Kinda a knock around tractor gun. Don't need to worry about the optics on it. Light and compact. Just giving you something else to consider.

Always thought the .260 was an under appreciated deer caliber.
