You always hear about smartweed being good duck food but over the years, Ive seen it fail to produce ducks pretty consistently. As I understand it, only some types are desirable. What do I have here? Trying to decide what to do with it come next summer.

Its a very light purple-ish color. Maybe a touch darker than what the pic appears. Thanks!

I'll leave the true ID to the experts here, but there could be other factors hindering the swamp's ability to draw waterfowl. Not to beat a dead horse, but smartweed is some of the best groceries out there.

Are there many ducks in the area to begin with?
    What species?
How large is the body of water?
How much water is 'open' and free of any vegetation?
    How deep is the water?

No ”expert” here but there are some things I do know about it.

First off, color will not identify what type you have as it all takes on different hues. As Displaced said, it is a very good food but there are so many variables as wether or not even a dump truck pile of corn would even work. For ID purposes, a pic of the whole plant (leaves) would help mount tremendously.

From what I’ve seen, it really takes a whole lot of SW coverage to produce good numbers.

Thanks for the thoughts but this is the first time on this property. Trying to come up with a game plan for next year and wondering if this is one of the more desirable varieties.

Took some better pics today. Maybe this helps.
