Another forum had a member asking about optimizing tss and steel duplex .410 for his younger hunter shooting a .410

He had some WinAA 2.5” hulls with Claybuster wads pressure tested, and field tested. They were safe pressures (11,500 range) and velocity was reported around 1200fps

He wants to stick to WinAA hulls and was looking for other ideas/options on wad choice.

Using some BPI 2.5” steel data and his tested data, a middle ground of a stretch36 wad was suggested.

I went ahead and loaded to check fit, and will later chrono/pattern with once fire WinAA, Herters, Fio, and new primed Fio hulls.

To compare, I loaded one of the new primed Fio hulls with a cut tps wad, and the rest were loaded with stretch 36 wads.

Hard cards and foam spacers were used to adjust stack height, prevent shot from sticking to the wad cup, and possibly reduce some pressure on the initial pressure spike.

The load is as follows

Once fired WinAA 2.5” .410
Win209
13.5gn LilGun
Stretch36 Wad
Foam spacer
150gn TSS 8’s (83pellets, 1.8gn/pellet)
Under
40gn Steel 6’s (30-32 pellets, 1.28gn/pellet)
Wax beads to help crimp
Fold Crimp

Herters once fired 2.5” hull
Cheddite 209
14.0gn Lilgun
Stretch 36
Hard card/foam under shot
150gn tss 8
40gn steel 6
Foam over shot
Fold crimp

Fio Once Fired 2.5” hull
Ched 209
14.0gn Lilgun
Stretch36
Hardcard under shot
150gn tss 8
40gn steel 6
Foam over shot
Fold crimp

2.5” new Cheddite Hull/Primer
14.0-14.2gn Lilgun
TPS cut to fit (3/8”)
Foam spacer under ahot
150gn TSS 8
45gn steel 6
Over shot foam

Or the above with stretch36 wad
Hardcard under shot
150gntss
45gn steel 6
Foam spacer

The WinAA loaded and crimped the best.
The tps wad seemed to fit the new hulls better than the stretch. The “complexity” of the loading, compared to 220gn hw15 in the stretch wad over 13.2-14.0 gn LilGun will be part of the overall assessment as well. (HW15 is 110pellets for 7’s, 88pellets for 6’s, and have killed geese)

This topic on the other forum gained quite a bit of interest.

With so little volume in a 2 1/2" .410 what is the purpose of duplexing?

Open the pattern I’d guess

To compare my 220gn hw15 is much simpler to load and responds to “normal” chokes well.

That makes sense but I would be concerned about the steel 6's crippling at any distance that would require tss.

No Gualandi “stretch” wads for my TSS, scrub thru is horrific.

I think for a youth shooter, these were considered for under 30yard shots
If that is so the tss 8's are ridiculous overkill. Bismuth 6's are more than enough. Been there, done that and it's why I'm still shooting factory bismuth even after I bought supplies to reload tss. Someday I'll get around to loading the tss for goose hunting.

Yeah, I don't understand the 6's either. 30 steel 6's going 1200fps that are going to get pushed out of the way by the TSS 8's aren't gonna do or contribute much, IMO.

Good data though.

I only have 8’s on hand. I target geese, so pellet density is on point, but lower. This other forum’s topic was originally about other’s experiences in 2.5” .410 load options. So just comparing and considering other load options
