Anecdotally, I found out this evening that my son's best friend from high school, in the Air Force now, was the flight controller who launched the F-22's for this mission. It's pretty cool to see the kids picking the ball up.

Story i read is they detected it upon launch in china and watched it all the way across the pacific.

I heard that low orbit satellite are up in the 400,000 feet above earth. The balloon was at 60,000 feet. So the theory, that the imagery wouldn't be that much better is wrong. Probably could see if screw heads were phillips head or star bit on everything.
