Looks like a real old female. Cool bird
It’s a south wind...
Took my coworker out for his second duckhunt ever, we had a good time.
Ended with a heap of widgeon, specs, sprig and two spoons.
First couple shots from him were holes in the sky, then he doubles on a pair of spoons. After that he was miss, miss, miss, and a few more before he collected his bull.
Sure is fun watching a newbie connect.
Plenty of birds when the rain stopped and he had a front row seat on sprig ID.
It was fairly slow until the wigeon got real wary around 9am. The drive north from sac this morning started out with my tree falling on my neighbors car (small tree) which i removed at 4:30 am. Followed up by 99 northbound shut down south of riego and had to take some levy road where i saw many people drive off the levee and get stuck---then encountered downed power lines near the duck club. Thank God the ducks ended up cooperating or it would have been a really long day. One of the craziest wind events i have ever experienced--top three for sure
That's the most trees and branches I've seen scattered here there and everywhere in a long while. Made for an interesting drive that's for sure. Ducks cooperated just enough, limit and my newbie hunter killed a few and learned what wind can do. He struggled. Also learned that he needs to follow up on a shot after smacking a bird that doesn't drop. Birds flying were mostly widgeon and mallard believe it or not. Didn't kill any green but they were sure flying.
Seems like a good day to be afield....
Any day afield is good really but it's special when you can get out there in the duckyest day of the season.
Thanks for the reports.
Had a couple Bulls swing by pulling greenheads with them. Didn't kill any green, but they found a good hiding place.
Small prayers being sent for 2sprig next year.
Shot the north grasslands this morning. Storm did not live up to its hype where I was.
Winds were in the low 20s with a spitting rain that let up just after shoot time.
Shot 5 birds in the first hour and then the flight flat out died.
I was on a 3 drake spoony rush until it was interrupted by a widgeon and a teal.
3 ringers,a wood duck, a lardo, a speck and snow for me, all drake ducks. Dad got a hen ringer.
Should have had a limit but lost two in the brush.
