There must be a zillion tons of Ammonium Nitrate transported around the world every year; it isn't an uncommon material by any means. There is a well documented history of unplanned bangs, not least that in Beirut about three years ago. From memory that was 6,000 tons-ish, so thirty is relativeley small beer.

Almost without exception the "accidents" with it are caused by human incompetence and / or stupidity; of itself, treated and stored correctly it's not particularly dangerous. Fkuc about with the stuff, don't follow the rules, and you'll regret it with a large vertical component.

I don't know how far it is from Cheyenne to California, but anyone walking the track will soon learn where the stuff landed; all the daisies will be nine foot tall and glow in the dark.

I've remediated bigger chemical spills than that without too much of a flinch

Yeah farmers here used to have tanks of anhydrous ammonia in their fields every year. The meth makers broke them of that.

My daughter, while in college, had to evacuate because of a burning storage facility of Ammonia nitrate.

ANFO is a very common industrial explosive.

The Federal building in Oklahoma City was destroyed with a Ryder truck loaded with ANFO.
