No bait on the trigger. Bottom edge merg set. Glad I connected before an otter or beav plugged up my trap.

Hat tip @woodiefanatic, he sent me to some fall fresh beaver chews. Found a very small lodge with little activity around it. Looked around for the highest shore nearby, sure enough found an open water bank den run going into some tree roots. This bachelor beav appears to be a Bud Light drinker.

    Owl was following me around

He should have been down the road snooping up some fresh rats out on top the ice

Got me one of them lesser long tailed beavs. Oh well. Pulled the set. Have Christmas stuff the rest of this weekend, a busy work day Monday but then off until 1/4. I'm gonna go hard on those days for a Fisher.

I had 16 sets out for fisher, some doubling as bobcat sets. Though 8 days, Nothing but a flying squirrel and a weasel, both trying to drag bait through the conibear. I was pretty disappointed as I had seen fresh fisher and bobcat tracks near most of the sets. Today I went to pull traps and on the first one I had a fisher.....the last one had an pine marten. Tagged out just like that. Pine marten was a bit of a surprise as I am on the fringe of their territory.

I started trapping about 7 years ago because I kinda got bored, maybe a little burned out on duck hunting. It seemed like I was just going through the motions. I trapped mostly beaver, skunks, coon and mink...in that order. I have found trapping to be a very humbling experience. Not having a mentor like I did with ducks, birds and deer, I have had to learn some really hard lessons. Getting a critter to step on a couple square inch pan or stick a head in a small opening is hard. And it is as hard or harder work than duck hunting. Scouting is huge. paying attention to every track, trail, crossover or sign that may lead to a catch is vital. Detail on sets can’t be overstated. It is addictive.

Otters still confound me. Yesterday, just a few hundred yards down from my cabin, an otter pushed his head up through a completely frozen over river, stepped out and took a dump and went back in. Best I can figure is they live in the voids left under the ice along the banks as the river receded after ice up. If they find a thin spot they push through the ice. I have been up and down the river a mile in either direction and no otter sign whatsoever. I took an old bucket set, cut it in half, placed it over the hole and funneled it out through a 220. Will they use this same spot again? I have a couple more weeks to find out.

Find some Beaver lodges/bank dens/dams that got trapped out this fall and set them. You'll have more Otter than you know what to do with. That's been my experience anyway.
