I have shot dozens of turkeys and have never used anything more than 2 3/4in 6 shot. Mostly 1 1/8 of 1 1/4 oz reloads 1200-1300 fps

What was the range on that pattern?

60 yards.

I use the TSS in the fall. Works good for geese too. On this hunt. I shot one hen at about 65 yards with this load. Then as the other turkeys ran by closer to me, I missed one (behind it) with the Remington lead 4s.

On this hunt, I shot a hen at about 50 yards with the tss then double tapped one at 55 yards with lead 4s. I also shot a third hen from the top of a tree. The dog got it up and it landed on the top of a cedar tree. It was only about a 25 yard shot. It wasn’t the best move as my poor shot or the fact that this huge load of TSS 7x9s ruined a bunch of meat.

For spring hunting, I use Winchester long bead #5s as that load shoots a good pattern at 50 yards and is significantly less expensive. Shot this one at 17 yards in very thick cover.

Here is a Jake shot at 54 yards in an open field.

BTW, made turkey leg soup today from a couple hens I shot this past fall.

Type of scope, please?
Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 shotgun scope I bought back in 2001 on clearance. It makes a world of difference when hunting in thick cover and low light and you can’t tell if the bird is hen of Tom.

BTW, I had that scope on my Remington 700 30-06 and it was not the best combo, but it’s perfect for a shotgun.

This is a serious question? Not stirring the pot I promise but why do you shoot a turkey at 50-60 yards? Is it that the birds wont finish? or physical barrier?(creek/pond/etc) It is the only shot you have? TIA
